What makes good student learning outcomes?

The main goal of learning outcomes is to introduce students to the skills, knowledge, and dispositions needed to succeed in college. Educational institutions are responsible for providing a variety of different ways for students to develop these skills and gain this knowledge. The outcomes need to be specific, measurable, and achievable. The outcomes should also be broad enough to help students gain a broad skillset and narrow enough so that every student can develop a set of competencies aligning with the school’s mission. 

The learning outcomes need to be restated at the beginning of every academic term so that students know where they stand and what the next academic year holds in store for them. The outcome should be as similar as possible between academic departments because the courses and assignments will reflect the outcomes of that particular department.

In order to produce good student learning outcomes, it is important for the faculty member to define the different measures of success. The measures should be consistent across all disciplines.

How Can it Be Improved?

In order to improve student learning outcomes, the faculty needs to use a greater variety of assignments and assessment methods. More in-class activities should be included as well as more writing assignments and discussion-based projects. If these additional assessments are to be used, however, the faculty members teaching them should receive additional training in teaching and evaluation skills.

3. Give students multiple opportunities to demonstrate their knowledge or skills through a variety of assessment methods. For example, have assignments and quizzes with different criteria (i.e., short answer and essay).

4. Give students multiple opportunities to demonstrate their skills through group work . This can be done by assigning groups of students to complete a certain project or research paper and then having them present their creation to the class at the end to receive feedback from the professor that also helps them revise their project before presenting it in front of the class again.

5.Have more interaction with your students . This can be done by having more office hours, providing more information in the course syllabus, grading papers quickly and thoroughly, and emailing students if something comes up on their probation or needs to be revised.

6. Check regularly on student progress . Doing this makes it easier for the professor to see what areas need help or are confusing for their students. It also allows them to make adjustments when called for or give additional explanations or examples of a certain idea when previous ones were not clear.

7.Be consistent with the terms you use to describe your coursework with your students. This way, they will not be forced to waste time relearning the material that they have already learned.

8.Check in with students periodically to see how they are doing throughout the semester and if they are struggling in any area. This allows you to be more helpful while also helping them to feel more at ease taking a particular course or learning a skill that is new or different from their previous experience.

Having learning outcomes is beneficial because by identifying the things that you want to accomplish in your class the students are able to recognize how the different course materials are related to the overall theme or focus of the class. What is essential to good student learning outcomes is having a variety of assessment tools so that every student has a chance to express their knowledge and demonstrate their skills regardless of their academic major or proficiency in English.
